S1 was about self-modification with Leekie, S2 was religious with the Proletheans, and S3 will be about military super-soldier programs. Maybe the writers are going for an overarching cloning-implication theme every season. It made for some exciting moments and interactions but I doubt it will stand up to much scrutiny as far as realism is concerned. With his death I don't expect to get any clear answers on them. We never got clear information about Henrik's background - how did he know about all the clone programs, and if he had been in the program before how did he succeed in running his organization without a hammer coming down on him? Given that he recruited Mark he must have had a lot of insider information. One other element of S2 that didn't hang together as well for me was the Proletheans. A lot of hints get dropped about what was really going on, and with the reveal of the military program in the finale it seems like they've got several possible directions they can go in that would fit in well with an overarching plotline. I felt (hoped?) that much of S2 is expository setup for S3. I'm really glad the military theme is coming in, as that is what we most have to fear with genetic manipulation. Cloning as an abstract is a cool plot device, but it's the 'ethics and implications' that make it a worthy topic. I was actually hoping the self-modification cult/ure would reemerge because that was a major intrigue for me in season one. I'm not sure I am so forgiving, as I want this show to be as brilliant as its potential. And I keep wondering how she got so wealthy (as that huge credit card charge from the hotel processed without even a hold).ДЄnd I fear you are right about the writers 'making it up as they go along.' They clearly had season one figured out in advance, but season two felt a lot less cohesive. I did really like the brief glimpse of the German. I feel haunted wondering who they are, but perhaps we are meant to conveniently forget them. I actually just started rewatching from season one and it was stated she killed four. They seem to be playing with character interactions and bringing up some interesting hard sci fi questions about the ethics and implications of human cloning and human experimentation. I mind this for shows where there's an assertion in interviews that there's a grand plot that will eventually be revealed (looking at you, LOST), but in the case of Orphan Black the show runners have never said this. They've also shelved and forgotten some plotlines entirely (consider superstar media sensation Leekie who was creating a self-modification cult in S1 vs harried middle-manager Leekie with no apparent public presence in S2). I love the show but there are some weird plot gaps and inconsistencies if you start thinking about some things too much. Maybe we can look forward to a classy gem-encrusted eyepatch. The injury she took was life-threatening but certainly wasn't guaranteed to kill. I hope we'll see more reveals of her back story. At this point she does seem to be fairly consistently trying to protect the girls, regardless of what she had been up to in the past. I also don't know how much has been planned ahead of time and how much is being layered on after the fact. I'm also not sure what's ultimately going on with Mrs. Helena does now seem to be generally protective of children and her sestras, so we can like her as long as she doesn't revert. If the dialogue kept reminding us that she had offed several of her sestras, it would make it a bit harder to buy into some of the love fests. IMO they don't bring up how many clones Helena killed because they want her to be a mostly sympathetic character now.
